Commander-in-Chief's Office,
China Station,
20th. April, 1919.
I have the hour to acknowledge the receipt of
Your Excellency's letter No. 550/1919 of 10th. April, 1919,
relative to the provision of a high powered W/T Station.
The W/T Station at Stonecutters Island is the
property of the Admiralty and is one of a chain of Standard Stations which were erected by the Admiralty withthe original intention of ensuring that any of H.M. Ships, when passing throug the links of the chain, were in continuous receiving touch by W/T.
Owing to the number of Stations in the chain com- -nication with Europe by this method is necessarily very slow, for with the present power used signals cannot always be pass through, owing to the excessive atmospherical disturbances tha are experienced in the tropics. If this chain should be requiry for official or commercial traffic it will be necessary to increase the power at the different Stations,

It is not possible to state definitely wh thør
a second high-power Station were built in the Colony, the work of the Stations would interfere with one another: it would be necessary to get the opinion of the Engineer who designed the Station, but it is believed that owing to the development of W/T during the last four years, especially of the C.W. system, a Station could be designed and a wave-length used dierering con- -siderably from those already used hoonecutters so that any inference between the two could be overcome.
Excellency
The Officer Administering the Government,
Hongkong.
